Richard Scanlan Gray, age 78 of N. Topsail Beach, NC passed away Monday, February 23, 2015 at his home with his family after a short fight with cancer.
Richard was born on June 20, 1936 in Newport News, VA. His parents were Arnoll Hall Gray and Mary Theresa Scanlan Gray. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Arnoll Hall Gray, Jr.
Family left to remember Richard are his wife of 24 years, Rene’ Suzanne Bannister Gray; his labrador “Salty”; children, Michael G. Lee, Jr. and wife Tanya of Roanoke, VA, Paula E. Grose and husband Joe of Dallas, GA, Babiche M. Slack of Stockholm, NJ; grandchildren, Lindsay Grose, Morgan Grose, Emily Grose, Davis Lee, and Ethan Lee; sister, Ethelann Gray Ponzo and husband Ronnie of Newport News, VA; other family members, mother-in-law Nita Carmichael of Greenwood, SC, brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Jenny Bannister of Hendersonville, NC; and many nieces and nephews.
Richard graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1960 with an Engineering degree and held various jobs throughout his career retiring as a civil servant for the US Army in 1997.
A memorial mass will be held at a later date to be announced.
Memorial donations in Richard’s memory, in lieu of flowers should be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401 (910.796.7900). The care provided to Richard by the Hospice was beyond words, Thank You.
