Robert Bradford “Brad” Baker

September 10, 1961 - September 2, 2014
Robert Bradford “Brad” Baker

Brad age 52, of Wilmington, slipped away from his family and many friends on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 while being cared for at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. At his side were his Mother and Brother. He suffered intensely
recently from his illness, but his passing to God was a gentle thing.

Brad was a native Wilmingtonian, born September 10, 1961 and graduated from John T. Hoggard High School, proceeding to earn his BS in Geology from UNC-W, with additional studies in drafting and engineering at James Madison University, UNC-C and University of
Georgia at Augusta.

He was a Hydrologist and a Registered Geologist in Wyoming, Georgia,
Alabama and both North and South Carolina, and worked with Superfund Site clean ups and Department of Energy issues. His employment was with Charles T. Main Engineering in Charlotte and Science Applications International Corporation at the Georgia Savannah River
Site.

His work allowed him to travel a great deal, which he loved. He snorkeled in Key Largo and other locales and loved getting muddy and dirty while spelunking in caves in Virginia and other places.
One of his most memorable trips was a 1982 multi-week cross-country drive with his beloved Father and his brother, with visits to far-off relatives, the Grand Canyon and many other points of interest.

He also enjoyed music and teaching music to others. As a percussionist, in High School he participated in Honors Bands and the highest All-State Bands, later playing in local theatrical productions.

One of the high-lights of both music and travel was his participation in the 1978 International Music Festival in Mexico City.

He was totally devoted to his parents and was greatly loved by them. He retired early in order to take care of his Father during his several years of failing health and after his Father’s death, his
Mother.

He was and will always be his brother’s Hero.

He was known by everyone who met him for his sweet smile and caring demeanor.

He always loved nature and animals and yet the work and family responsibilities he cheerfully undertook made it impossible to have a pet of his own. We hope he has that opportunity now as a partial reward for the sacrifices he made for others during his life here on earth.

He was the son of Joyce Christmas Baker and the late Robert Edward Baker and is survived by his Mother, his brother, Jeffrey Roy Baker, (Iris), a step-niece, Zoe Whittington, and step-grand nephew, Byron Whittington, his uncle, Ralph Christmas (Betty), aunts, Sally F. Christmas and Donna Serrapedes (Ralph), seven cousins, including a very special cousin, Lisa Bransford (Henry), of Santa Fe, NM. and three very special friends: Ken Howell of Charlotte, Aidan Windham and Dean Weber, both of Wilmington, NC. (To Aidan and Dean, he’s sorry to have missed the kick-off on Thursday night).

If you care to make any donations, please contribute to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation 1414 Physicians Drive Wilmington, NC 28401 the Yahweh Center of Wilmington 5000 Lambs Path Way, Castle Hayne, NC 28429 or any animal shelter you wish.

    Chris Clodfelter says:
Sorry to hear about Brad's passing. We attended UNCW and JMU together studying geology. We also worked in similar professions and lived nearby each other during a short period of time in Charlotte. I've tried to re-connect several times over the years, mostly through internet searches. Looks like I finally had some luck but too late. RIP my buddy Brad.
