Robert E. Sunderland, Jr., age 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Davis Nursing Home, Wilmington.

He was born November 18, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA to Lida and Robert E. Sunderland, Sr. He was predeceased by his first wife, Emmy Sunderland as well as his sister, Marjorie Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Sunderland and three daughters, Trish Greenberg of Florida, Jean Wibbens of Virginia and husband, Eric, Janet Warren of Maryland and husband, Bob, as well as his brother Dr. J. Edward Sunderland and wife Mary, from Massachusetts, step daughter, Lynne Toepke of North Carolina and husband Al, and step son Barry Schlack of Arizona. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Weidner University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the Army overseas in World War II. He was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, an avid boater & RV camper and traveler. He retired after 30 years from DuPont Cape Fear Plant in 1985.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 1 pm at Wesley Memorial UMC, 1401 S. College Rd., services to follow at 2 pm. Reverend Charlie Hause will be officiating.
