Memorial Gifts & Donations

Roger Lee Spurbeck, age 84, of Wilmington passed away Saturday, August 18, 2018, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter after a brief illness of cancer. He was born in Clarence, NY to Harold V. Spurbeck and Dorothy M. (Detweiler) Morgan.

Roger was one of a kind. He had an enormous heart and never met a stranger, helping many in need and expecting nothing in return. Roger had served as a Merchant Marine earlier in his life. He had an entrepreneurial spirit like no other having owned several businesses throughout his career and seemingly never entertaining the idea of retirement. His second career however should have been dancing as he was a talented Shag Dancer and was a member of the Wilmington Singles Dance Club dancing at the American Legion Post #10 and the Elks Club.

He is survived by his loving companion and sweetheart, Jo Ann Brookshire, along with his children, step-children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; his sister Mary Ann Smith of Glendale, AZ; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Wilmington Funeral Chapel.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the wonderful care given to Roger along with the kindness and comfort towards his family and the many prayers and support from family and friends during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401 or the American Legion Post 10, 702 Pine Grove Dr., Wilmington, NC 28409.
