Selma Barbara Avent, born on February 6, 1930, in Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully at the home she shared with her son on April 19, 2024, in Wilmington, NC. She was 94 years old.

Selma married Lawrence A. Howard and they had their son, Lawrence “Larry” G. Howard, then they divorced a couple of years later. On November 27, 1959, Selma married George D. Avent in the Bronx, NY. She dedicated her life to caring for others as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at New York City Metropolitan Hospital for 19 years. Her compassionate spirit led her to continue her service at what is now known as Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Hospital until her retirement in 1995 at the age of 65. Upon retiring, she moved to Wilmington, NC, where she continued to touch lives with her kindness and warmth.

She found great joy and purpose in her faith, being baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1975. Selma became a full-time Pioneer in 1990, serving in the Classon Point Congregation in the Bronx, NY, followed by the Sunset Park Congregation and later in the Cape Fear Congregation in May of 2023, the latter two located in Wilmington, NC.

Selma leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. She is survived by her cherished son Lawrence G. Howard, adored grandchildren Sabrina Howard, Devri Howard, Heath Graham, Darrell King, Shanekqua King, and Jon King, along with 13 precious great-grandchildren and 2 special great-great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by many other extended family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Selma was preceded in death by her parents Isaac and Marie Brown, her dearest husband George D. Avent, her son George Avent, Jr., brothers Russell Brown, Raymond Brown, Horace Brown, and Donald Brown, sister Evelyn Golden, and grandchildren Shawn Howard and Jimmy Graham.

Services to honor and celebrate Selma’s remarkable life will be held on Friday, May 3, 2024, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 2:00pm. May her legacy of compassion and faith continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Please click the following link to view the bulletin for Selma: Avent Bulletin.
