Shirley Sanders Clawson, 79, of Wilmington, NC passed away surrounded by her family on December 16, 2015 as a result of leukemia. Born November 18, 1936 in Elk City, Oklahoma, Shirley is preceded in death by her parents Dessie Hill Sanders and JB Sanders.

Shirley was soon joined in death by her husband Frank Clawson, of 57 years, on December 17, 2015. She is survived by children, Michael Clawson (Donna Arthur) of Greenville, NC; Marshall Clawson of Raleigh, NC; Mark Clawson of Detroit, MI; grandchildren, Kimberly Weston (Brian) of Greenville, NC; Daniel Clawson (Suzie) of Greenville, NC; Brooke, Grant, and Lauren Clawson of Detroit, MI; Mike Arthur of Wilmington, NC; great-granddaughter, Kenley Weston of Greenville, NC; sister, Nina Powell of Sarasota, FL; brother-in-law, Mel Lyons of El Paso, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and graduated from Regina School of Nursing in 1957. Shirley and Frank lived in many different states traveling with his job which she treated as a wonderful new adventure. Shirley enjoyed working as a nurse in many of those states while raising her three boys. She loved Wilmington and enjoyed retirement here beginning in 1994. She was also an active member of Little Chapel on the Boardwalk Presbyterian Church primarily with the women’s circles.

A joint memorial service will be held at the Little Chapel on The Boardwalk Presbyterian Church for Frank and Shirley on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 2pm with Pastor Pat Rabun officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to LCOB Presbyterian Church, 2 Fayetteville Street West, Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480 or The Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center.
