Stanley Collins Smith, 40, Devoted Husband, Son, and Brother, departed this life January 19, 2012, following a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry, daughter Devon, father Donald Edward Sr., and brother, Donald Edward Jr. He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Stanley Smith, and sister Sharon Reaves Modinos.

An avid outdoorsman, Stan was happiest when surrounded by God’s Creation of nature, especially through fishing. A skilled herpetologist by avocation, he will be particularly remembered for his work rescuing and caring for reptiles of all sorts.

He is remembered by his numerous lifelong friends for his kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit. His intelligence and humor were appreciated by all who knew him. A true Southern Gentleman of the old school, another like him shall not enter our lives again. He will be truly missed.

A Memorial service will be conducted 4:00 PM Saturday January 28, 2012 at Winter Park Baptist Church. The Rev. Eric Porterfield will officiate the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to benefit any local animal shelters or organizations.

    To all of Stan's family with our deepest sympathy. Memories of our son's childhood growing up in Long Leaf Hills will always include Stan. What a team they were. So many pillow cases vanish from our linen closet to use for collecting snakes. People in the neighborhood knew what team to call if there was a snake in their yard. Hans and I learned from the Stan and Hans Mikael team to respect the reptiles and also to identify them. They are fond memories and Stan will be part of them forever.
