Straughan Henley Watkins “Spike” Dixon

Straughan Henley Watkins “Spike” Dixon, 64, died on November 30, 2021 after a short but courageous battle against cancer.

Spike was born on February 6, 1957 in Henderson, NC to Amie Watkins Dixon and William Dayton Dixon, Jr., who predeceased him.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 43 years, Sharon Fletcher Dixon; his 3 children – Straughan Henley Watkins “Watt” Dixon, Jr., William Fletcher Dixon (Michelle) and Marie Scott Dixon; his 5 grandchildren – Katie, Dayton and Will Dixon, and Emory “Mo” and Norah Powell; his 3 siblings – Sarah Jane Carver, William Dayton “Jake” Dixon, III (Katherine) and Amie Dixon Irby (John); and Sharon’s mother, Jean Fletcher Fields, and her brothers –Jan and Gary Fletcher. He is also survived by his Great Aunt Ruth Watkins Barber (Milton), and many nieces, nephews and cousins, whom he loved dearly.

Spike attended Woodberry Forest School and graduated from Vance Senior High School where he excelled in athletics. After attending East Carolina University, he embarked on a 30 year career with Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, where he achieved the level of Vice President and Plant Manager.

Spike enjoyed his childhood summers on the Outer Banks with his siblings and cousins, as well as playing golf and poker with his many friends, but his proudest achievement and greatest source of pride was his beautiful family, whom he adored. He enjoyed traveling with Sharon, trips to the family cabin in Wilkes County, afternoon family boat rides around Wrightsville Beach, or dips in his pool with his grandchildren. He was a thoughtful and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin and friend, and he will be sorely missed.

Funeral services will be held on December 11, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home in Henderson, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends make a donation to the charity of their choice.

    Sam Currin says:
I was so saddened to hear about Spike’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with Sharon and the children and all of Spike’s family. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to talk to Spike a couple of weeks before he died and will remember him fondly as perhaps my oldest friend. I regret that I was not able to spend more time with him and Sharon. Peace be with Spike where suffering is no more and with Sharon and the family as they cope with their loss.
