Memorial Gifts & Donations

Susan Hargrove Reed, 80, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away March 13, 2024. She was born in Huntsville, Alabama on December 16, 1943, to the late Frank Hargrove, Jr. and Burmaline Hall Therrell.

Susan grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from North Georgia College with an A.B. in English in 1965. That same year, she married her college sweetheart, Victor Brown, with whom she had two sons, James (1968) and Nathan (1971). After working as a homemaker and mother, she resumed her education and enjoyed a long career as an Addictions Counselor, first in Fairfax County, Virginia, and later in Wilmington. She married the love of her life, Dennis Reed, Sr. in 1988 and shared a loving, rich, and happy life together with him.

Susan is survived by her husband, Dennis Reed, Sr. of Wilmington; her son James Brown and his wife, Susan, and their children Jacob and Miller; her son Nathan Brown and his wife, Amy, and their children Savannah, Noble, and Faith; her stepchildren, Pamela Reed Thompson, Deborah Reed Smith, and Dennis Reed, Jr. and his sons Trey and Jack Reed. She is preceded in death by her father, Frank Hargrove, Jr.; her mother, Burmaline Hall Therrell; her beloved stepfather, James Hamilton Therrell; and her brother, Frank Hargrove III.

From her earliest childhood, Susan loved singing, dancing, and playing the piano. She was a lifelong voracious reader, and she instilled in her children a deep love of music and books. She took special joy in all her grandchildren, and set a very high bar as a grandmother. She had a keen sense of childlike wonder and whimsy all her life, as evidenced by the impressive collection of toys and contraptions she kept on hand for grandchildren (and adults, too) to play with whenever they visited. She was always good for a spontaneous gift that she thought would bring the recipient happiness. Susan’s loved ones will remember and cherish her generous, loving heart; her infectious vivacity; her quick wit and her beautiful smile.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no official service for Susan.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Lifecare at the link above at “Memorial Gifts and Donations”.
