Thomas David Hyatt
August 27, 1940 – April 27, 2015

Thomas David Hyatt, 74, of Leland, NC passed away on Monday April 27, 2015 with his beloved family by his side. Thomas, was lovingly referred to as David by family and born in Dillon, South Carolina the son of the late Thomas Hyatt and Sallie Cook Hyatt.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Cleo Hyatt and Elmer Hyatt and three sisters, Betty Woodard, Mattie Simmons, Juanita Enzor and a great-granddaughter Cloey Jaquelyn Hyatt.

He proudly served his country in the US Army. He retired from DuPont in 1993 after a 23 year career.

He served on the Leland Town Council as a councilman from 1991 to 1995 and was a big supporter and advocate for all community efforts for Leland’s progress.

Thomas was a family man. Family was his most prized possession. His true love was his wife, Juanita and his kids. Everything he did, he did for them. Nothing made him happier than to have big gatherings with his family complete with lots of food, lots of smiles and lots of laughter. He cherished every visit, every phone call he received and always wanted to know how everyone was doing and always told everyone to stop by to visit. God knows that man loved to cook and bake!

Anything from a full meal for the entire family to cakes and pies for snacking on when you would stop by for a visit. And you could always find a pan of biscuits stored away on the counter or inside the microwave. He absolutely loved to see you come in and make yourself at home in the kitchen.

Anyone who knew Thomas knew how much he loved to garden and landscape his yard. When visiting him, he would often take you outside to walk you around his backyard and garden to show you either the new flowers he had planted or the vegetables he meticulously grew. And on most of those visits, before you left he
would offer you an azalea that he was growing in pots. He loved gardening so much that often, when visiting his children, he would give them suggestions on what to do with their yards and remind them he had the time to help and the plants to offer.
Neighbors will remember riding by his home only to see Thomas on his Cub Cadet riding mower methodically cutting his grass and working in his flowerbeds. But he always took the time to stop to chat with them either about town events or, of course, his yard. There was never a time that you didn’t see him proudly strolling through his backyard looking at his labor with his beagle Lizzie or his cat Miss Kitty.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 43 years, Juanita Charles Hyatt; son, Thomas Hyatt (Chris) of Bolivia, NC; three daughters, Sally Lewis (Craig) of Winnabow, NC, Joyce Hyatt Benton (Jack) of Charlotte, NC and Evelyn Thomas (Shawn) of Leland, NC; five grandchildren, Shauna, Ian, Issac, Brent and Katelyn; and six great-grandchildren, Bobby, Brenden, Olivia, Rhiannon, Landon and
Greyson; brother, Winfred Hyatt (Mona); sister, Thelma Oliver; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Wilmington Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Friday, May 1, 2015 at Greenlawn Memorial Park with the Reverend Bill Fowler Officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor his memory with a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for his granddaughter, his sugar plum, Katelyn Thomas.
