Thomas Dwight Benson

Thomas Dwight Benson, a life long member of the Piney Grove Community in Delco, was  born on September 11, 1945 in Wilmington, NC passed away at his home on November 15, 2023 in Delco, NC. He was 78 years old.

Thomas dedicated 25 years of his life as a Saw Filer at the West Frazer Wood Yard in Riegelwood, NC. His hard work and commitment to his craft were admired by all who knew him. Woodworking and furniture making brought him great joy.

Preceding Thomas in death are his parents, Van Lee Benson and Laura Mae Carroll, his son Jonathan Benson, brother Irvin Benson,  brother and sister in-law Houston Benson and Anelle, and his sister Mary Benson Jackson. Though their absence is deeply felt, they will forever live on in his memory.

Thomas leaves behind a loving family and cherished friends. He is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Judy Formy-Duval Benson, his son Dwight Benson and wife Meredith, stepson Charles Grice and wife Jennifer, stepdaughter Wendy Roderick and husband Tommy, daughter in-law Amanda Benson,  his brother Van Benson Jr., and his sisters Geneva Todd and husband Paul, Sadie Robinson and husband Jim, and Katie Moore; sister in-law Thelma Benson.

Thomas will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Addison Benson, Cody Bullard, Dylan Grice, Mae Adams and husband Clarence, and Kate Benson. Their love and laughter brought immense happiness to his life.

Services in memory of Thomas will be held as follows: Memorial visitation from 3 PM to 5 PM on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Wilmington Funeral Chapel, located at 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403.

Special thanks go out to his caring and compassionate caregivers from Liberty Hospice, including Tammy Stevens, Betty Graham, and Social Worker Amanda Gay. Their unwavering support during Thomas’s final days brought comfort to both him and his family.
