Thomas James Vasos, 77, of Wilmington passed away Saturday October 5, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Tom was born October 19, 1935 the son of the late Harry and Mary Costa Vasos. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1958, where he lettered in football. He and his family relocated to Wilmington in 1973 and went to work for France Neckwear/ Pacesetter Industries/ Remington Apparel until his retirement. He was a youth football coach for many years as well as and avid golfer, and poker player for over 40 years.

He married Renetta Hayman Vasos on May 9, 1959 and together they raised four wonderful children Sons Todd Vasos and fiancé Sandy Pratt of Nashville, TN., Troy Vasos and wife Teresa of Wilmington, daughters Trisha Vasos and Tina Vasos Cameron both of Wilmington. Also surviving is his brother John Vasos and wife Barbara of Las Vegas, and sister-in-law Marsha Woods and husband Curtis of Calumet City, IL. Tom was also blessed with seven grandchildren Megan (David), Marah, Cliff, Chad, Leah, Lexie and Savannah. He also received and extra blessing to see four great-grandchildren into his family.

Memorial Service and reception will be conducted 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at the Temple of Israel, located at 4th and Market Streets and conducted by Rabbi Paul Sidlofsky.

The family will be sitting Shiva and taking condolences at the home Wednesday & Thursday at 7pm and Friday before sundown.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Temple of Israel for the new building fund.

    Dad, Thank you for being a great dad and teaching me how to be the same. There are no words that can be typed to express how sorely you will be missed by Teresa and I as well as your two grandsons (Cliff & Chad) who hung on your every word and worshiped the ground you walked upon. I have never suffered a loss of so many important things in my life all at once before; in one breath I lost my dad, mentor, leader, listener, football game buddy, late night breakfast partner, strongest critic but also strongest supporter, loudest cheerleader, defender and my hero. My largest losses are the love and guidance given to our family..........and..............I lost my very best friend in the entire world!!!! I will go on and continue to make you proud of me each and everyday, not because I want too but because I have too!! That's what you taught me.......to be strong, never give up, never be a quitter or except loosing. I will never forget our favorite saying "YOU HAVE TO HATE TO LOOSE MORE THAN YOU LOVE TO WIN" to be successful at everything in life.     My heart goes out to the entire Vasos family. Tom was a unique and special man, greatly loved by all. I feel so fortunate to have been a part of his life...he was a great mentor and role model. Tom,I will always remember how you taught me about football, how you loved a good steak, and all of the great times and laughs we shared.
