Memorial Gifts & Donations

Timothy (Tim) Allan Hammonds, Sr., born on March 22, 1951 in Wilmington, NC, passed in the early morning hours of January 24, 2024 at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Hospital.

Tim was a dedicated truck driver who worked 29 years at FedEx Freight, having received an award for his 24th consecutive year of safe driving in 2023. In his time at FedEx Freight, Tim met many coworkers and customers who would develop into valued friends.

One of Tim’s favorite pastimes was buying and working on old cars, with his most recent project being a 1941 Chevrolet Special Deluxe. Through this hobby he met many people who also became lifelong friends.

However, more people knew Tim through his talent with a guitar. He was a self-taught musician, whose music entertained countless people over the past 40+ years. He was a member of many bands, but he found enjoyment in his later years playing with the band Change. As a member of Change, Tim traveled to many churches playing in praise of the Lord. Tim truly shined brightest with a guitar in his hand.

Tim’s memory lives on through his sons Timothy Allan Hammonds, Jr. and James Ryan Hammonds, his daughter Ronni Cuthrell, his brother James Walton Hammonds, Jr., his sister-in-law Susan Hammonds, and his grandchildren Nathan Hammonds, Presley Cuthrell, and Dawson Cuthrell.

As we mourn the loss of Tim, we are reminded by the impact he had on all the lives around him. His heart-warming smile, pride in his children and grandchildren, and his dedication to helping others live on forever in our hearts.

Timmy was my cousin, but he was closer than a brother to me. We played for many years in the clubs together. His talent on the guitar was admired by all. From the first time I saw him play I was amazed at how good he could play. When I started playing drums I always thought how awesome it would be to be able to play with him. Then after playing for a few years I got that opportunity. I was awe struck and nervous as could be that I could get to play with someone as good as Timmy. He was the best guitar player I ever had the privilege to play in a group with.. After we played in the clubs we totally switched venues and we started playing for the Lord. We thought we were having a good time in the clubs, but they couldn't compare to the good times that we had playing at many churches and many events. God blessed Timmy with so much talent and then even increased it when he started to serve him. God gave Timmy many songs, Timmy even started singing after many years of never singing in front of any one. God gave me many songs, and all of the songs that God gave me, Timmy by the guidance of God's Spirit helped me to put the music to them. He had to be very patient to listen to me trying to make the sounds of a guitar or a bass to show him what I was hearing in my head. Timmy every time in just a little while would come right up with the perfect music... That Was God!!... Our first gospel group was called First Step and then we were in the group called Change... Oh what a Change Jesus made in our lives... I will miss my brother and I am looking forward to playing music again with him in Heaven. Timmy I always knew you were... God's Guitar Player...

I am sorry to hear of his passing. I got know him a little from his lunches at Tavern 14. He was quiet but one could see very caring. I could tell and see that he loved his daughter Ronni very much. Rest In Peace Mr. Hammonds - I know you will be keeping an eye on your family and grandchildren.
