Mary Lou Lavenia Wilkins Barefoot “Vennie” of Wilmington died peacefully at home on April 4, 2014.

She was born on April 18, 1927 in Harnett County, the daughter of the late John Dave and Kizzie Ellen Jones Wilkins. She as a faithful member of Oak Grove Presbyterian Church was ready to be with her Lord and Savior. Granny’s main passion in life was her family and those she called family. She loved them more than anything and devoted her life to taking care of them. She was loved by all who knew her for her kind soul, good cooking and years of quilting. She retired from the former Kings Department store in Wilmington in 1982.

Vennie is preceded in death by her husband William Clifford Barefoot who passed away in 1997, her beloved son Eston “Rickey” Barefoot, and her sisters Sylvia Barefoot and Virginia Coats, brothers Bennie, Herman, Jack, Henry, Robert and Willis “Shorty” Arbor Wilkins.

Surviving are a daughter Marie McCauley and husband Jimmy of Wilmington, sons Mickey Barefoot and wife Lynn of Robertsdale, AL,  William C Jr. “Bill” Barefoot and wife Bonnie of Sylva, NC. daughter – in- Law Susan Barefoot of Wilmington. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Michael Barefoot, Blair Barefoot (Joetta), Betsy Barefoot Carawan (Jake), Chrissy McCauley, April Barefoot Tisher (Chris), Courtney Barefoot Stegall (Stephen) and her eleven great-grandchildren on which her happiness thrived. She was able to meet her last great-grandchild minutes before leaving this earth.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 6 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Wilmington Funeral Chapel.

 Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday April 7, 2014 at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Harold Manning will officiate. Burial will follow at 1:00 PM Greenlawn Cemetery.

The family would like memorial donation be made to Oak Grove Presbyterian Church 3736 Carolina Beach Road Wilmington, NC 28412.

    Heaven got a special angel. Aunt Vennie will be missed by so many. But I'm sure uncle Bill welcomed her with one of his big olé bear hugs. I can see her now making blankets for all the new babies being sent to earth, bc like she always told me girlie you gotta keep that baby warm. My kids are 21 & 19 and still have their special aunt Vennie blankets.

    I was sad to hear of your mother's passing. I will miss her greatly. She was one of the people who welcomed me with such open arms when I first came to the church. It is her smile I will miss the most, but I am sure she is smiling in heaven as she is reunited with your dad and the rest of your family. Do you think she and Ms. Fannie are now sitting together on the same pew in heaven, too?
