Victor E. James, Sr., of Wilmington, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011

Vic was born July 31, 1927, in New Hanover County in a neighborhood called “Dry Pond.” He loved all the people he grew up with during that pre-World War era. His greatest pleasure was telling stories about his escapades as a youth to anyone who would listen.

After graduating from New Hanover High School, Vic joined the Navy and served until the war ended. Vic was raised as an Advent Christian in the church his great-grandfather, the Reverend Joseph King, built at 6th and Castle Street in Dry Pond.

In his lifetime, Vic worked for the Atlantic Coastline and the United States Postal Service. He retired from the post office with eighteen years as a letter-carrier and thirteen years in management.

Vic was preceded in death by his parents, Grace Darden James and John David James; four brothers, Durwood, Marion, Charlie, and Bobby; and one sister, Grace Erma Clinebell.

He is survived by his wife, June Caison James of 58 years. Also surviving are son, Victor E. James, Jr., and wife JoAnne of Greenville, NC; daughter, Cyndie James Hobson and husband Clarke of Charlotte; a grandson, Matthew McLeod James of Chapel Hill; and granddaughters, Grace Chandler Hobson and Cameron Elizabeth Hobson of Charlotte. Vic is also survived by a brother, David C. James and wife Hilda Reynolds of Belvedere, S.C., plus many nieces and nephews whom he also loved dearly.

A memorial service will be held at Wilmington Funeral and Cremation, at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 27. The Rev. Duncan Futrell and the Rev. Mark Owens will officiate. Visitation will immediately follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Victor E. James, Sr., to the Salvation Army, 830 N. 2nd St., Wilmington, 28401.

Dear Aunt June Dear Cousin Vic Jr Dear Cousin Cyndie Im am so sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Vic. What a sweet man is what I remember most about him. I still remember him from childhood sitting on our sofa, Aunt June right beside of him and both grinning from ear to ear. Wish I could be there but had a little surgery myself yesterday (Friday). Just please know you all are in my thoughts and prayers. Love you all, You're family. And Uncle Vic, may you rest in peace. Gregory James..Bobby's 2nd son.
