Walter Richard Shirer 57, of Wilmington passed away Monday July 2, 2012 at Davis Health Center.

Walter was born in New Hanover County on June 6, 1955 the son of the late Harvey Anderson and Bessie Worrell Shirer and was a graduate of New Hanover High School, he was a former employee for the City of Wilmington.

Surviving are his wife Joyce McLaurin Shirer and her children Michael Silva, and Regina Cotter, his brother Darry Shirer and wife Linda of Wilmington, Marvin Foster and wife Faye of Lumberton, five grandchildren Angel Cotter, Kristina Cotter, Michael Ray Silva, Justin Horn and Jimmy Meeks III, one great-grandchild Kirstian Meeks. a nephew Billy Ray Shirer.

    Walter will be missed by many people; especially me. He always made me laugh even when he was in pain. What a great attitude he had. I'm happy that he is in heaven now and can walk, laugh, and enjoy. What a strong, wonderful person he was. As were his brother and sister-in-law, Linda and Darry. My best to the family.
