Mr. William Alexander “Billy” McCormick, 78, passed on to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, January 6th, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 from 11:00AM till 12:00PM, at Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church, 800 Piner Rd, Wilmington, NC 28409

Born on September 16, 1942 in Laurinburg, NC, his family moved to Wilmington where he grew up his entire childhood. After High School at New Hanover High, Billy was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army and was a Track Commander in Mechanized Mobile Units in Ft. Carson, Colorado, and a year long deployment in the Republic of Korea, patrolling in and around the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Returning from service overseas back to Wilmington, Billy worked for many of the local plants as a welder and boilermaker. In 1984 he acquired the ServiceMaster of Wilmington franchise and later that year opened McCormick Auto Sale, running both businesses for five years before going into car sales full-time. He operated his car lot in a couple of locations, all on Carolina Beach Road for a total of thirty-seven years. He had many friends associated with the car business, and he grew up with many friends from Wilmington and the surrounding area who were like brothers to him. He was a long time member of Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church. Billy was a fixture on the ballfields of Wilmington and coached several teams to championship seasons. He also sponsored Little League Baseball teams for Myrtle Grove Optimist for several years. He adored his family; he loved being a grandfather and took an active role in his grandsons lives. He especially loved his wife Dorothy and they were inseparable in over a half century of marriage together. He truly enjoyed helping people and went above and beyond for those in need. He was his family’s rock, safe harbor, and smooth landing. He can never be replaced.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, whom he adored, Dorothy Register McCormick; son Keith Alan and daughter-in-law Debra Apodaca McCormick; grandsons Dylan Connor and Ian Nathaniel, all of Wilmington. He is preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly Lynn; mother Ruby Catherine and father Lynn Tatum Sr., and brother Lynn Tatum (Mac) Jr.

A funeral service will be conducted on 12:00PM, Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church, interment will follow the services at Oleander Memorial Gardens. Covid restrictions will be applied, masks are required.
