William Douglas Bell, age 80, of Wilmington, NC passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019, at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Beulaville, NC on September 14, 1938, the son of the late Roland Franklin Bell and the late Mamie Hatcher Bell.
William (known to everyone as Bill) was an extraordinary man. He was one of those men that was so full of knowledge and seemed to know the answers to most anything you asked him. There wasn’t any given time that his family or friends couldn’t ask him a question that he wouldn’t know the answer to, how to fix it, or even how to build it.
He loved his family and friends and never seemed to meet a stranger as Bill had a smile for everyone. He spent over 30 years working as an Auto Mechanic, then lived his dream of being an over the road truck driver. He loved to see new things and travel to new places.
One of his favorite past times was buying scratch off lottery tickets and traveling to the casinos. It was fun to watch his excitement when he hit a jackpot, always waiting on that big win! He used to say “Got to spend the money now because I can’t take it with me!”
He was an avid fisherman and bowler. He spent most of his younger years in bowling tournaments winning many trophies. Since retiring he joined a bowling league again where he enjoyed bowling every Thursday. His face would light up telling his family how well he bowled each time, and at his age, that was pretty Amazing!
He is preceded in death by two wives, Betty Lou Davis Bell and Linda(Lynn) Lou Russ McCartney Bell.
He is survived by his five children Lee Bell(Stephanie), Mike Bell(Elizabeth), Debra Miller, Kim Harrison(Chad), and Forest McCartney(Corinne), fifteen grand-children, and twenty-nine great-grand children.
His wish was not to have a funeral or wake, as he did not want everyone standing around him heart-broken and crying. His family is honoring that wish by giving him a Celebration of Life Memorial to be held on Saturday February 16, 2019 from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm at Liberty Baptist Church, 7957 Market St, Wilmington NC 28411(across the street from Aldi’s grocery store). The family would love and greatly appreciate if you can come by and share your wonderful stories of knowing this wonderful man as we send him Home.
