William (Bill) N. Calhoun passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 4, 2021 of prostate cancer at 71.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol (Diller); his son, Todd Calhoun (Michele) of Wilmington, NC; his daughter, Amy Mardayat (Aditya) of Richmond, VA; his son Adam Calhoun (Sarah) of Fredericksburg, VA; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Kay Calhoun of Columbus, Ohio and Elizabeth (Betty) Strine of Canton, Ohio. He and Carol sponsored two German Foreign Exchange students, siblings Bjorn and Frauke Lipprandt, who are considered honorary family members, as well as the rest of their extended family in Germany. He is preceded in death by his first wife Rebecca (Deaver) and his parents Newton and Esther (Baehr) Calhoun.

Bill was born on August 30, 1949 in Bucyrus, Ohio. He graduated from Ball St. University with a bachelors degree and Bowling Green State University with a Masters in Education.

Bill worked for Vanlue and Findlay, Ohio School systems for 30 years as a business education and occupational work education (OWE) teacher. During his time in the Vanlue/Findlay area, he served for over 20 years as the secretary of the Findlay Masonic Lodge #227, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason. He also volunteered for 20 years as a yard marker official for Findlay High School Football games and served as an assistant athletic coach for sports teams at Vanlue High School for three years. Upon his retirement in 2002, he and Carol moved to Wilmington, NC.

During Bill’s time in Wilmington, he worked for the Wilmington Area and Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Centers and the Wilmington International Airport as the official greeter/ambassador of the airport. He also volunteered with Battle Lacrosse in handling scorekeeping duties for his grandchildren’s lacrosse games and local tournaments.

He and his wife loved to travel, the ocean, Lake Erie, Ohio State Football, and visits with family. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to one of the following:
